Sophia was born with Holoprosencephaly (HPE) on November 3, 2002. HPE is a congenital anomaly in which there is incomplete development of the brain. Sophia has experienced many health problems secondary to her brain malformation. At the tender age of 6 months, when other parents are experiencing the developmental joys of their precious babies (sitting, baby talk, crawling, personality changes), Sophia experienced infantile spasms. These seizures caused severe developmental regression in her physical development, learning skills, and emotional and social development.
Sophia's motor and sensory impairments affect her mobility and ability to perform activities of daily living. Medical equipment is necessary to support her highest functioning level. Gait trainers, orthopedic car seats, special seating devices, standing frames, and special wheelchairs are some examples of the equipment Sophia requires.
