Learning to Walk: Help for Making that Happen
Walking is a big milestone for humans! For those that need support to achieve this task, we offer numerous solutions that can be adapted to meet each person's specific needs.
Gait trainers do exatly what their name says. They train a person how to use their gait pattern to move around their environment, in other words, WALK! Gait trainers often have extra support to relieve some of the user's weight so that their muscle can learn the movements. With time and practice the supports can be adjusted as the user gets stronger. This allows them to walk while supporting more of their own body weight. Many other accessories can be added on to provide support for the hands, arms, chest, legs, and feet as needed.
Walkers are typically the right fit for a person when they can use their hands and/or forearms to control the walker and then move their legs to keep up with the walker. Some walkers are designed to provide "gait trainer level" of accessories to start. As the person gains more and more strength and independence, the accessories can be removed, leaving a traditional style walker to allow them to move more independently.
