The side lying position is often referred to as the “rest position” since it significantly decreases the pull of gravity on the muscles of the body. Besides rest, there are several significant therapeutic benefits to positioning a person on their side. People with physical limitations often have difficulty bringing their hands together in a place where their vision can aide them in exploration. Even typically developing babies when lying on their backs take time to develop the strength to bring their hands together on their chest and more time to bring their hands together with arms extended enough to bring their hands into their line of vision. Not so in the side lying position. The side lying position is beneficial in “integrating” the two sides of the body. Helping the extremities on one side of the body to become aware of the extremities on the other side of the body. The side lying position does this as gravity naturally brings both sides of the body together and can place the hands in a supported position in the line of vision. Also, as babies begin to experiment with movement from one position to another, side lying is often the place they learn that a little bit of movement can result in a big roll! Side lying is also a great position to provide pressure relief for people who are not able to reposition themselves.
The Tumble Forms Universal Side Lyer is a classic piece of postural support equipment for the side lying position. If custom positioning in side lying is needed, consider the Versa Form Plus Positioning Pillow. Versa Form technology allows the pillows to be shaped and reshaped with customized density and firmness.
