Balance Bikes: A Great Way to Learn Balance on Two Wheels

A balance bicycle is a training bicycle that helps riders learn balance and steering. It has no foot pedals, no drivetrain, no chain and no gears. To function properly, a balance bicycle must be small enough for the rider to place both feet flat on the ground while sitting on the bicycle’s seat. The rider first walks the bicycle while standing over the seat, then while sitting on the seat. Eventually, the rider feels comfortable enough to walk quickly then run while riding the bicycle, then to lift both feet off the ground and cruise while balancing on the two wheels. Riders learn at their own pace, without fear of falling, quickly gaining a sense of confidence and adventure. Manufacturers of balance bicycles say that riders learn to ride a bike more quickly because they learn to balance and counter steer first and then to pedal later, and that training wheels actually slow learning because riders become too dependent on them, acquiring bad habits. Training wheels that prevent the bike from leaning also prevent counter steering, so that, as with a tricycle, riders learn to turn the handlebars the wrong way, which must be unlearned later. Balance bikes have also been recognized as a learning aid for adults learning to ride.

Learning to ride a bicycle is a universal rite of passage. Everyone knows it’s a great way to stay fit. But did you know that riding a bicycle has many therapeutic benefits? They can help riders work towards goals like increasing range of motion and improving motor planning, reciprocal leg movement, strength, coordination, endurance, and more. Being able to ride is also a natural confidence builder and supports the development of self-esteem. It is also perfect for social recreation. The benefits can’t be overstated.

Balance Bikes for Special Needs

For people with special needs, a balance bike can be a valuable piece of equipment at home, in the therapy clinic or at school and can be used by riders of all ages. The first thing to consider when selecting a balance bicycle for adults or kids is size. The maximum weight capacity, seat height and handlebar height will help you decide which style is best for your rider. At Adaptivemall.com, we offer balance bikes with weight capacities ranging from 60 to over 200 pounds, so make sure to click on the "size chart" tab of each bike to make sure it will be a good fit. We recommend reaching out to us for customized advice, sizing help and anything else you may need!
