Understanding The Freedom Concepts Snugglesaurus
The Snugglesaurus, even its name conjures up images of cuddly fun. It is a delightful new product from Freedom Concepts with an incredible amount of versatility. In fact, when the Snugglesaurus was designed, the engineer’s goals were to promote curiosity, creativity and exploration in play for young children. They have done just that and so much more! This positioning and playtime product from Freedom Concepts is a unique and innovative tool for early intervention and the needs of children 6 years and under.
The Snugglesaurus is comprised of five triangular “humps” in a single, fun color of your choice. Together they create an over 5-foot long Snugglesaurus! Up to four “humps” can be added to “grow” your Snugglesaurus. Each triangle can be used separately or in combination. They attach together with heavy duty snap fasteners. The outer covering fabric is 100% Polyurethane (PU). It is soft, flexible, and breathable and feels like leather. It is easy to wipe clean and maintain. A Med Block Liner, impermeable to fluids, lies below the fabric and ensures that the filling stays clean and sanitary. A zippered closure on the Med Block Liner offers access to fill. The filling can be DIY- some examples are foam particles or bean bag filler- or you can purchase the Freedom Concepts Foam Fill.
The Snugglesaurus:
- Is safe and appropriate for young children with all levels of ability
- Can provide postural support in developmental positions
- Can promote motor planning skills, strength and coordination as children experiment in gross motor play
- Is a great place to challenge developing static (still) and dynamic (moving) balance in all developmental positions
- Offers a unique sensory experience
With the Snugglesaurus, play time and therapy time quickly become one.
Here are some ideas!
Cushions can be used individually or in combination to support posture in all developmental positions- sitting, prone (lying on stomach), supine (lying on back), side lying, kneeling and quadruped (hands and knees).
Children can challenge their skills on all fours as they crawl down the length of the Snugglesaurus. One cushion can be detached and placed under the Snugglesaurus to create an elevated center for climbing up and down which helps build strength.
Children can “leap frog” in sitting from one cushion to the next.
The Snugglesaurus invites creative approaches to play and movement experiences which builds motor planning skills. Use the Snugglesaurus in an obstacle course!
The Snugglesaurus can be stood on one end to create a fort! Therapeutically, the very same fort provides a soft barrier to create a protected space with a visual boundary to help improve focus or facilitate calming.
Because you can choose the fill for each triangle of the Snugglesaurus, you can determine the sensory experience the Snugglesarus provides. For example, the Snugglesarus can be filled with bean bag filler or foam particles to create a “just right” squish for deep pressure applications and sensory crash pad activities. These are common elements of a sensory diet for some children. By providing unique sensory experiences, the Snugglesaurus can also help to improve body awareness.
If you choose to purchase the Snugglesaurus with the Freedom Concepts Foam Fill you will have a firm shape with some give. This is a great surface to practice balance!
- Sit on one of the humps of the Snugglesaurus for reaching activities.
- Try to walk across the humps of the Snugglesaurus.
- Jump down from one of the humps.
- Practice stepping over a single cushion.
- Place one foot on the cushion and leave one foot on the ground and try to balance.
- Sit on a cushion and practice standing up without hand support.
The Snugglesaurus is the perfect addition to any daycare, early childhood classroom, clinic, playroom or living room! The result is fun for everyone while kids engage in activities that will support progress towards developmental milestones.
