Research has shown that all of us can benefit from active sitting. Individuals with special needs may have even more reasons to use an active seat. Sometimes people with special needs have a hard time processing where their body is in space (proprioception). To compensate, their bodies stay in constant motion to give their brain the necessary feedback to understand where they are. Some individuals engage in movement for other reasons related to sensory integration (the body’s ability to take in and process information from the environment through the senses). This is no problem on the ergoErgo Extra Stool. It has been designed specifically to accommodate and encourage movement. People with low muscle tone often lean into structural support such as the sides and back of a chair. Heavy reliance on support and subsequent decreased muscle activation during sitting leads to poor strength and endurance of postural muscles. The ergoErgo stool requires consistent activation of core muscles to maintain upright sitting thereby increasing strength and endurance of these muscles. “Therapy sessions” happen without the sitter even realizing it! The ergoErgo stool also facilitates a healthy upright posture with typical physiological curves of the spine and the sitter can adjust their posture and shift their weight with ease. The combination of the stool’s flat bottom and the user’s feet planted firmly on the floor offers stability far beyond what is found when large exercise balls are used for active sitting. And, when the sitter stands up, the seat does not roll away! What about individuals who have difficulty maintaining their focus and attention to tasks, for example people diagnosed with ADHD? Active sitting improves concentration and a person’s ability to learn. Moving and stretching address key aspects of UDL (Universal Design for Learning), including enhancing self-regulation through stress reduction, decreasing hyperactivity, and increasing focus. It is made of UV-stable, recyclable technopolymer and can be used indoors and out. It comes in 3 sizes to suit just about everyone. Height adjustments of approximately 1 in. can be made to all sizes thanks to the green self-sealing plug in the bottom of the seat that allows for the addition or release of air. (Please Note: A small amount of oil (vegetable oil, olive oil), Vaseline, or silicone should be applied to the plug first, to maintain the seal, before inserting the fine needle of a ball or bike pump to top off or take out a little air.)
