Convaid Safari Tilt
The Convaid Safari Tilt-in-Space Wheelchair is a compact-folding special needs push chair designed for stability and comfort. It offers an extended continuously adjustable tilt range from 5° to 45° using the caregiver’s actuator/release lever on the push handle. This provides convenient pressure relief and upper body support for users with limited trunk and head control. The flat planar seat with cushion further promotes posture control. Simple adjustments allow the Safari to accommodate user growth, making it suitable for children, teens, and young adults. Optional features include recline to open the seat-to-back angle and an anatomic back for extra lumbar support.
In Step 1, select your Safari’s size and color for Heavy Duty Upholstery. The upholstery is removable, washable, and comes in various colors, which you can preview in the Photo Gallery. Refer to the Size Chart Section to ensure a proper fit with room for growth.
Also in Step 1, you can purchase the Transit Version of the Safari. This version includes Transit Anchor Brackets for use with vehicles with wheelchair tie-downs. The Headrest Extension, H-Harness with Padded Covers, 3-Point Pelvic Belt and Elevating Leg Rests with Swing-Away Footplates with Foot Positioners are required for the Transit Version. The Safari’s Transit Version has passed WC19 & ISO7176 transport safety standards.
In Step 2, you can select the optional Anatomic Back, designed with contouring to follow the natural spinal curve, providing optimal postural support, comfort, and increased lumbar support.
In Step 3, the optional Recline Function is available for Size 16 only. This feature allows you to open the hip-to-back angle from 90° to 135°, offering an even greater range of adjustment for pressure relief when combined with tilt-in-space.
In Step 4, select your Trunk and Pelvic Supports. The Safari includes a 2-Point Positioning Belt as standard, unless you’ve chosen the Transit Model. The Transit Model requires a 3-Point Positioning Belt and H-Harness with Padded Covers.
Here are your options for trunk and pelvic support:
- 3-Point Positioning Belt: This belt, with a depth-adjustable crotch strap, helps maintain proper pelvic position and prevents sliding forward. Note: For Transit Models, this must be purchased with an H-Harness.
- H-Harness with Padded Covers: Provides anterior trunk support to maintain upper body position and reduce fatigue. Note: H-Harness must be purchased with a 3-Point Positioning Belt.
- Full Torso Vest: Select this for even more trunk support. It helps users maintain correct midline upper body position, prevents slumping, and assists with shoulder retraction. This comfortable and secure vest is easily adjustable and detachable.
In Step 5, you can choose to upgrade the standard flat Support Cushion for your Safari.
Here are your cushion options:
- Align Cushion - Lateral Pelvis/Lateral Thigh Support: Features contoured edges for lateral (side) pelvic stability and thigh positioning, reducing side-to-side pelvic movement and improving lower extremity stability. Recommended for users with low muscle tone.
- Cushion – Medial Thigh Support/Anti-Thrust: Offers medial (inside) thigh support, helping to separate legs into neutral alignment to maximize weight-bearing and stabilize seated posture. Recommended for users with increased extensor muscle tone and a tendency toward extensor thrusting.
In Step 6, choose your optional Head Support and Headrest Extension. (Note: The Transit version requires a Headrest Extension.) See the Photo Gallery for images.
Your head support options are:
- Occi-Headwings: Offer sub-occipital (below occiput) support for midline head positioning, comfort, and unobstructed head movement and vision.
- Padded Headwings: Height-adjustable, soft foam headwings provide lateral (side) support for midline head positioning.
In Step 7, you'll select Foot Supports. Refer to the Photo Gallery for images. (Note: The Transit version requires Elevating Leg Rests with Swing-Away Footplates and Foot Positioners.)
Your options are:
- Standard One Piece, Non-Folding/Non-Elevating Footplate: Can be adjusted in height (distance from seat to footplate) only.
- Elevating Leg Rests with Swing-Away Footplates: These leg rests can be raised as desired, which is particularly beneficial when using the tilt-in-space and optional recline features. The footplates swing away for easier transfers. Individual Angle Adjustable Footplates can be added.
- Individual Angle-Adjustable Footplates: The angle can be adjusted to accommodate limitations in ankle/foot range of motion, ensuring proper foot positioning and alignment. They can also be adjusted forward, backward, sideways, or rotated vertically.
- 3” Leg Rest Extension: Can be added for taller users to any version of the individual footplates. Note: Cannot be added to the standard one-piece footplate.
- Foot Positioners: Adjustable Velcro® straps properly position feet on footplates, maximizing contact area and alignment. Straps can be placed around the ankle or across the foot. Foot Positioners come in three sizes with circumferential measurements of: Small (7-10 in), Medium (8-11 in), and Large (9-12 in).
In Step 8, you can select Tire Upgrades if desired. Pictures are in the Photo Gallery, find standard tire details under the Features Tab and read the Understanding Tires article for guidance.
